COMSU - Central Ohio Mounted Search Unit

What COMSU Can Do

COMSU is an organization of volunteers based in central Ohio and available to help in search efforts throughout Ohio, where the unit works under the auspices of the Emergency Management Agency.

We have served the Licking County Sheriff's Department, have searched with the Fairfield County Sheriff's Department and have responded in other areas of the state as well. We work on horseback and on foot.

Give Something Back

We also provide other types of public service, such as allowing our horses to act as goodwill ambassadors during Kids 'n Cops Day. At a local fair, we helped patrol the parking lots and midway to look for lost children, discourage theft and DUI's, and to facilitate crowd control.

After a disastrous ice storm, members helped clear trails in local parks. This led to a close relationship with park officials, and we have since helped build bridges, clear new trails, and supported fundraisers.

Train Together

We are certified in CPR and First Aid. We learn the use of compass and global positioning systems (GPS). Other areas of training in which we strive for proficiency are: search patterns, radio protocol, crime scene conduct, formation riding and man tracking.

In a seminar at the Kentucky Horse Park, members trained alongside mounted patrol officers. Many of our members have passed tests for NIMS and CERT. (National Incident Management System and Community Emergency Response Team)

We conduct some of our search simulations with safety forces and other search units.

Horses Too

Each horse and rider team must pass a qualification test. Horses learn to walk under blowing caution tape, over platforms and tarps, drag heavy weights, and tolerate sirens, flares, emergency vehicles and chainsaws.
