Our People
Each member of COMSU is certified in first aid and CPR and is trained in many different disciplines including:
- map and compass reading
- radio communications
- crime scene conduct
- global positioning systems (GPS)
- search patterns
- formation riding
- man tracking
Regularly scheduled simulated searches and field training keep members current on the latest techniques and search methods.
Our HorsesOur equine partners must also be thoroughly trained and pass a qualifying test. For example, horses must:
- demonstrate willingness to drag a heavy weight
- allow rider to lead a second horse along side
- walk over bridges and plastic tarps
- walk through water without hesitation
- tolerate sirens, flares, vehicles, chain saws, and four wheelers
These are not natural behaviors for a flight animal that instinctually will run away from danger, so it is vital that each horse and rider team is able to remain calm and perform under challenging circumstances.
We take the process of training and qualifying horse and rider teams very seriously in order to insure safety for all involved. The ability of the rider to be in control of the horse at all times is critical to the success of our mission.
